Make Your Own Gesso

If you have seen my post “Make Your Own Chalky + Clay Paint” then you will love this post! Today we are going to be making our own Gesso. Gesso is usually a thicker paint with a look of, what I call, “tooth” which helps it stick to almost any surface and Gesso also adds texture!

Let’s Begin

So what goes in to creating your own Gesso? I needed very few things to make this: Plaster of Paris, water, glue, Tupperware or a container to store it in, and Paint Samples / leftover paint. All of these things you can find at your local hardware or craft store and I included a picture for reference!

I also used a 2 oz. portion cup to be my measurement tool. For my Chalky style paint I filled my 2 oz. portion cup with Plaster of Paris and poured that into my Tupperware container. I then added 1 oz. of water, mixed that until it was smoothed, and then added 1 oz. of glue. Adding the glue will give the Gesso more adhesion to different surfaces. For the color of my Gesso, I added 1 oz. of my leftover paint to the mixture I created.

I ended up using 2 ounces of Plaster of Paris, 1 ounce of water, 1 ounce of glue, and 1 ounce of paint. This will thicken as it sits, so when you seal it to reuse later, you may need to add a little bit of water.

I grabbed my canvas to try out the Gesso that I just made! It will dry a little matte, almost like a chalky style paint does and it has a lot of “tooth” in it to allow it to stick to most surfaces. I hope you enjoyed this and check out my YouTube video to watch me do this in a little more detail. If you do this, I would love to see how it went for you!
